Storm chasing in Tornado alley may face an uncertain future as the USAF will begin testing new technology to disrupt severe storms over the great plains in order to reduce the escalating cost of damage over the past years. The new SSUD (Severe Storm Updraft Disruptor) missile - the "Supercell Buster" - is designed to be carried by the new F-35 Lightning II aircraft. The missile is carried in tandem by two F-35s, suspended on an interplane weapons pylon, and fired at low level and ingested into the updraft. The first operational squadron, lead by former meteorologist Commander Jo Ann Harding, will commence operations on May 1 from Tinker AFB, Oklahoma, following crew advanced storm spotting and evasion tactics training at United States Air Force Weapons School. The pilots will be trained to prioritize storms by judging the difference in chasers reporting "Large wedge tornado on the ground" and "Huge wedge tornado on the ground" as well as to dodge hail and lightning. Harding expressed confidence in the programme's sucess, saying she is personally motivated by one of the supercells destroying her 'Dorothy' weather probe some 20 years ago.
